Watercolors by Sylvia Herrera will be on display in the gallery at the Kirk-Bear Canyon Library, 8959 E. Tanque Verde Road, Monday through July 31.
As a colorist, Herrera has always been attracted to the bright, beautiful colors of parrots. She has a timeshare in Kauai and often photographs parrots at the hotels when she visits Hawaii. Many of these images, and those of other birds, are captured in her paintings.
When she heard from some of her artist friends that there was a parrot-rescue group in Cascabel, near Benson, she became intrigued. She arranged visits to the facility and took photos of many of the Arizona parrots. The rescue, Oasis, has became dear to her heart because it rescues parrots that have been mistreated or have lost their owners. Once they go there, Oasis becomes their permanent home.
Herrera contributes paintings to Oasis' annual fundraising auctions.
