Terry Goddard (D)

Why we picked him:

"Goddard is a hard-nosed prosecutor with administrative experience in leading a big state agency. As mayor of Arizona’s largest city, he has the leadership experience to become governor on a moment’s notice, if necessary. That background makes him the clear choice over Reagan." David Garcia (D)

"Garcia is the most qualified, intelligent and visionary candidate for Arizona’s top education official we’ve seen in at least a decade. His detailed plans for revamping how students and schools are evaluated, how to direct any increase in education funding and how to better prepare students easily trump the illusive one-note anti-Common Core candidacy of opponent Diane Douglas, a Republican." "Kirkpatrick, a Democrat, understands the huge footprint of the federal government in CD1. But she’s also shown independence in opposing the Obama administration when it would hurt the economy of District 1.

She’s spoken against environmental regulations that would shut down the coal-fired Navajo Generating Station at Page and put at risk the copper smelter at Hayden. She says she wants clean air but that the regulations have to take into account the impact on jobs. She wants Congress and the president to approve land swaps for a new copper mine at Superior." "Barber has more expertise about the border, which was part of his job as Giffords’ district director dating to 2007. He’s a ranking member of the House’s Homeland Security subcommittee on oversight and management efficiency and has refused to fall into the heightened rhetoric around border issues, instead seeking facts and practical solutions.
