7 here are merit scholar semifinalists
Seven students representing three northwest-side high schools are semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship program.
The students
are:
• Connor D. Blanck and Alexander Zhang of Ironwood Ridge High School.
• Bracken P. Allen, Cary S. Kelly
and John P. McKearney of Marana High School.
• Daniel J. Anderson and Calvin P. Colson of Mountain View High School.
High school students from across the country enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test.
Semifinalists - there are about 16,000 - are the highest-scoring entrants from their states.

Finalists are selected in February, and Merit Scholarship awards begin to be issued
in March, continuing
through mid-June.
More than $36 million in scholarships will be awarded.
Register now for October nature camp
Registration is open for the Fall Break Nature Camp at Catalina State Park.
Children ages 5 through 12 can take part in the camp, from Oct. 11 through 15.
Fees are $85 per child for the 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. camp.
For an additional $30, extended hours are offered from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Camp activities will include hikes, games, nature education, crafts, wagon hayrides, archery, great outdoor adventures and guest speakers.
Parents must provide their children with a sack lunch each day, but two snacks will be provided.

NW students earn AP Scholars awards
Eleven students from Sonoran Science Academy were named recipients of the AP Scholars Award.
Erika Tinley and Brian Cloutier were recognized as AP Scholars with Distinction while Ian Armstrong qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award.
Eight of their classmates - Cera Cantu, Benjamin DePue, Matthew Kovacs, Bayan Sobhani, Shannon Wallace, Kimberly Wang, Rachel Wellington and Jack Whiteside - were named AP Scholars.
About 18 percent of the more than 1.8 million students worldwide who took Advanced Placement exams performed well enough to earn an AP Scholar Award.
Board candidate forum is Tuesday
The Marana Education Association will sponsor a forum for candidates for the Marana Unified School District governing board from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the cafeteria of Tortolita Middle School, 4101 W. Hardy Road.
All five candidates - Eric Brandriff, Tom Carlson, William Graham Glauser, John Lewandowski and Dean Spencer - are expected to attend. They are competing for two board seats, currently held by Brandriff and Lewandowski.
Candidates will make opening and closing statements and respond to questions from the community and those developed by the Marana Education Association and Marana Education Support Professionals.
Donations sought for student T-shirts
Quail Run Elementary School, 4600 W. Cortaro Farms Road, provides a free school T-shirt for every student each year.
This year, the school is about $400 short.
Most donations come from businesses that get their names on the backs of the shirts, but the school is happy to accept small donations as well.
