When speechwriter Karl Hess coined the phrase "Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice; moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue" in 1964, he was a fervent supporter of conservative presidential candidate Barry Goldwater. Within a few years, Hess had become a philosophical anarchist, who was billed as the "Field Marshal of the Revolution" at a radicals' convention.
