CASA GRANDE — A tractor-trailer rig crossed Interstate 10's median and collided with another vehicle in a fatal accident that closed the highway about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson for hours Thursday.
The accident occurred about 5 a.m. near Casa Grande. Westbound lanes were reopened about four hours later, but eastbound lanes remained closed, causing long delays in travel toward Tucson.
The Department of Public Safety said a westbound big rig crossed over into the eastbound lanes. One person in the other vehicle was killed.
Helicopter video showed one heavily damaged vehicle on the shoulder and the truck on its side off the highway.
Detour routes for eastbound traffic included taking I-10 west from Phoenix to State Route 85 and Interstate 8 to reconnect with I-10 in the Casa Grande area.
