What you're saying about the late Sen. John McCain

Readers and Tucsonans write Letters to the Editor about the late Senator John McCain who died on Saturday.

Elect more like Sen. McCain

We Americans of all political persuasions mourn the passing of Sen. John McCain, a great American patriot. His principled devotion to our nation was demonstrated in many ways. He was a good man and did much good for our nation.

Though he was not perfect, he kept his moral compass pointed at true north, humbly admitting every mistake and asking forgiveness. He sacrificed and gave much to us all. To honor his legacy, we must vote for others like him who will honor and serve our nation with integrity, courage and humility.

A great man remembered

May God bless John McCain and his family. A brave man who had character and integrity. He will always be remembered in history as a great man who rose above partisan politics.

Job well done! Time to come home now.

Such a refreshing change from egocentric people who call themselves leaders these days. Long live the maverick.

Senate seat suggestions

Meghan McCain should serve out her father’s Senate seat. Jeff Flake would also be a good candidate. Hope they are being considered.

We can be heroes like Sen. McCain

Fellow Democrats, we have work to do. Saturday night, the last honorable Republican died. I didn’t always agree with his politics, but I respected him immensely. Most of us will never have a chance to leave the footprint he did. Individually, we probably never will. But together we have a chance to reverse the horrendous decline of this country.

President Trump’s base refuses to look at his narcissism, obstruction, racism and misogyny for what it is and no argument will turn them back. There is only one way to solve this problem: Make YOUR mark on this country. Vote in enough Democrats to control this president with checks and balances. I disagree with Trump’s view that McCain was not a HERO. Together we have a chance to be one, too. VOTE!

Fitz cartoon among his best

Fitz’s cartoon in Sunday’s paper showing Sen. McCain being met by Barry Goldwater is one of the finest he has done. I am seldom a big Fitz fan, but this time he has hit a home run.

Gov. Ducey, pick carefully

Gov. Doug Ducey has a sad but crucial task ahead of him: selecting someone to fill Sen. McCain’s gigantic shoes. While pondering who would be an appropriate representative for us, the governor should keep in mind Sen. McCain’s ability to cross the aisle to vote for a better USA.

He advocated campaign-finance reform, liberalized immigration laws, and more recently voted to maintain the Affordable Care Act. Gov. Ducey should not be swayed by the voices of the right flank of the Republican Party. This choice is his opportunity to inject more ethics, humanitarianism and eloquence in the current Senate.

McCain supported Eastern Europe

Thank you for the wonderful tribute to Sen. McCain’s life and his contribution to the United States. What author Ann Brown didn’t include was his lifelong, relentless commitment to the democracies of Eastern Europe — Georgia, Ukraine and the Baltic States — and his intense pressure against Russian aggression. President Petro Poroshenko expressed the sentiment of all Ukrainians: “We will never forget his invaluable contribution to the development of democracy and freedom in Ukraine.”

Sen. McCain was on the Maidan in Kiev to support protesters. He was on the front lines in 2106 in support of the Ukrainian forces.

The article also missed the opportunity to state the reaction of Russia on the death of Sen. McCain. Russian lawmaker Leonid Slutsky said: “He was neither a friend nor ally of Russia ... McCain was an outstanding American hawk.”

While most world leaders commented on the senator’s glorious career, Vladimir Putin was oddly silent. These remarks would have completed an excellent article.

Where’s the respect?

It’s pretty sad when the president of the U.S. cannot even make a simple statement of respect on the passing of an American hero and statesman.

We can follow senator’s example

Upon hearing the sad news of Sen. McCain’s passing, I was moved to eulogize this genuine man on my Facebook page. Then, I wondered what we can do to truly honor him. I offer a thought to ponder.

Think of one of John McCain’s positive qualities that you most admire yet have not incorporated into your own life; then, choose to honor his memory by personally living that particular quality.

Sen. McCain, a class act and genuine patriot, consistently chose to influence the world in a positive way; however, he is no longer with us, but each one of us has the capacity to influence the world in a positive manner. The choice belongs to each of us. Honor Sen. John McCain through your actions.

My heartfelt condolences to the McCain family during their time of loss and sorrow. Semper Fi.
