Cars are not permitted to turn right during red lights inside of the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind intersection, West Speedway Boulevard and North Grande Avenue in Tucson.
Red left arrows
Recently, I was westbound on Speedway turning left on Campbell at a red arrow. West and east bound was green with no traffic coming eastbound. I was first in line with a young driver behind me with someone behind him. He began honking his horn trying to get me to turn. He was stuck between us and couldn’t move. When the arrow turned green he immediately went to the center lane and gave me the middle finger salute as he raced passed me. Red means stop. Kids slow down. You have a long life ahead of you. Thank you, City of Tucson!
The red arrows DO make us all safer.

Hamas sympathizers
People are also reading…
There have been over 2,000 arrests so far as the mayhem continues on college campuses and elsewhere. Many more involved fighting law officers as they try to bring order. From reports all or nearly all have been released to go back and participate again. Property has been vandalized including breaking into buildings bringing down our flag and replacing with Hamas, desecrating statues including George Washington.
Question 1: Where are the parents? If my child were involved I would stop funding their education and call them home.
Question 2: Compare this to Jan. 6. The FBI has systematically tracked down all who participated, found them guilty and put them in prison. Students are threatened with expulsion. I guarantee the vast majority will be allowed to continue.
Question 3: Who is furnishing the tents, head scarves, Hamas flags, helmets and professional signs? Do you really think that these items just magically appeared overnight at campuses all over America?

Climate change
To the skeptics and facilitators of climate change, this issue is NOT about you! The transition away from fossil fuels was never expected to be without hardship. While efforts may be made to alleviate the financial burden, it will inevitably be costlier, and government regulations might challenge personal liberties. However, the focus is not on individual financial interests or desires, but on the welfare of future generations, including your grandchildren. As the earth warms, the melting of permafrost and subsequent release of vast amounts of methane is imminent, leading to profound changes on our planet. The increasing frequency and ferocity of tornadoes in the Midwest is just an early indicator of the potential consequences.

Recent articles on Water Regulation and IRS
In a recent drive to New Mexico, we passed hundreds of acres of nut trees along I-10. The immediate thoughts were: 1. They must use a lot of ground water, and 2. Who picks all the nuts?
The recent investigations at the IRS show that under President Trump’s pick for the head of the IRS, Black families were audited 4.7 times more than others, and there were 70% less audits of millionaires.
It appears that the Heritage Foundation has planned on a second Trump presidency to reap the goals of the wealthy elite GOP members: let everyone else pay taxes needed to run the country, and reduce business regulations to protect their wealth.
The Arizona Star’s articles help voters realize what is truly happening. Thank you.

We need a new County Attorney
I am the victim of a home burglary that was recorded on video camera. A man trespassed on my property in the early evening, attempted to force open the front door to my house, then side doors. He managed to open the door to an RV parked beside the house and entered it. My niece was home and was terrified.
I called the police. They came right away, removed the man from the RV, arrested him and took him to jail. They also took the video recording as evidence.
County Attorney Laura Conover refused to prosecute this man. As a homeowner and business owner, I am appalled. We need a new county attorney who will do the job.
I am supporting Mike Jette, an experienced prosecutor who listens to constituents, transcends party politics to do the right thing, has a calm and engaging demeanor, and wants to use the office to make a positive difference in our community.

Hope this helps
This is in response to writers complaining there should be more conservative letters posted. Well Tucson is Blue. This results in more liberal letters. Get over it. Also, a lot of conservative writers have trouble finding anything good to report on the Orange Con Artist. On the other hand, liberals have a lot to say about him.

Re: the May 6 article “How about a little autocracy?”
Oh the joys of an autocrat … to have a magical all-knowing ruler sprinkle pixie dust to fix the nation’s problems … just give him the power, and voila, you can sit back and relax because the country is in the hands of a benevolent overlord … all roses and rainbows … until it’s not. Once King X rigs the system by appointing like-minded justices, judges, administrators and yes-men, and gagging the press, his authority will be all-consuming, aimed at benefiting him and his toadies.
An autocrat is the dream of someone who does not abide the work of participating in a democracy … it takes effort and frustration to know our history, our issues, their causes and their possible solutions, the resources involved and the willingness to support elected decision makers. Even if he were the wisest of humankind, he is still one person with one person’s beliefs, whims, and biases, who would be incapable of understanding the diverse cultures and needs of our citizens.
Please support democracy.

Border security
I am writing in regard to HB3602 which failed in the House of Representatives. This was a bipartisan bill, yet it could not pass.
This was a good bill and included many items from the H.R. 2 bill presented in 2023. Representative Ciscomani (Congressional District 6) has taken a great deal of heat for not supporting border security. I know of no other Congressman who takes border security more seriously than Representative Ciscomani.
Had everyone who voted for the Foreign Aid bills voted for HB3602 it would have passed. Why is Representative Ciscomani being held responsible for that?
May 8, 2024, he gave a strong speech on the floor of the House regarding the border. I believe that folks should listen to this speech to answer questions they may have relating to his sincerity of border support.

No surprise
It’s no surprise that Surprise and other affluent Arizona cities received the highest voucher acceptance rate. A Brookings Institute report found that participation of the Empowerment Scholarship accounts, ESAs, was highest in communities with the lowest poverty rates and highest median income. Add to that, the statistic that areas with the highest college-going numbers benefited most. The report’s goal, to determine if ESA vouchers are “realistically a path to making access to schools more equitable,” found a “highly disproportionate” number live in affluent communities like Surprise, Paradise Valley, Scottsdale, and Peoria. Since no proof of income is needed to receive ESAs, this statistic should be self-apparent, but Superintendent Tom Horne ignores this fact, along with the absence of teacher accountability on standardized tests, acceptance rates of students with special needs or language concerns. The Brookings report supports the numerous flaws in the ESA voucher system and should alert Arizona voters that Horne and his legislative allies should removed from office in the next election cycle.

Divestment an effective tool for change
Re: the May 9 article “UA’s Gaza encampment a sign of hope.”
The ongoing debate about student demonstrations advocating the divestment of university endowments from companies supporting the Israeli government’s atrocious massacre of Gazan civilians highlights the close relationship between businesses and government misbehavior. The op-ed by Gabb Schivone and a recent letter from a reader take opposite sides, with Schivone highlighting the history of the successful 1980s divestment movement against Apartheid in South Africa.
The view that university endowment managers are obliged to stay invested for the most lucrative returns is shockingly immoral. Those of us lucky enough to have money to invest know well that we have a choice as to what companies to invest in. Increasingly, many of us have already chosen funds with positive environmental, social, and governmental goals (ESG). Universities, of all corporations, should model ethical investing, trying to make the world better, not worse. The students have it right.

Democracy
If you vote for Donald Trump you will get retribution. If you vote for Joe Biden you will get democracy.
If you vote for Donald Trump, and he does not accept a loss, you will get a “blood bath.” If you vote for Joe Biden you will get democracy. If you vote for Donald Trump you will get a total abortion ban. If you vote for Joe Biden you will get democracy. If you vote for Donald Trump you will get a weaponized Justice Department. If you vote for Joe Biden you will get democracy. If you vote for Donald Trump you will see thousands of federal employees fired for not being loyal to him. If you vote for Joe Biden you will get democracy. If you vote for Donald Trump you will get a dictator on the first day. So, vote for Joe Biden for democracy. The decision is yours.
