Christian nationalism has evolved into a politically entrenched and organized movement. Christian nationalists cherry-pick historical facts, writings, and events to argue that the United States was founded as a "Christian nation.” Without question, religion (of all faiths) played a major role in the founding of our country and many books and articles have been written on the subject. All the history gymnastics that exist, however, do not change what did actually happen: Our founding fathers did not create a Christian nation. In fact, they were quite clear about this. The First Amendment of the Constitution has two clauses that deal with religion: The “Establishment Clause” prohibits the government from establishing a religion and the “Free Exercise Clause” prohibits Congress from interfering with an individual's exercise of religion. Article 6 prohibits religious tests for public office. And the Constitution does not mention God, Jesus Christ, or Christianity.
