Gerald Farrington's opinion piece "Barbarians pushing toward Dark Age" is remarkable for its sweeping generalizations, partisan opinion, and dearth of any relevant facts. When he postulates that: "We are rejecting science, fact, truth, education, reason, and human growth and progress", who is this 'We' he is referring to? I certainly hope that I am not included in that group.
The sentence: "Let's inject some 'bleach' into our life's blood and ruthlessly engage in some cultural purification to see if we can purify ourselves a bit." sounds bitter, and tautological.
BTW, when faced with a 'Dark Age' looking ahead from Rome's past glory, medieval scholars turned to the philosophy and science of the ancients. It was Aristotle's geo-centric, nesting spheres view of the universe, with God as the prime mover from above, that was rejected at the dawn of the Scientific Revolution.
