Arizona State has ditched Sparky for a little more Nike sparkle - and a whole lot of black.
Announcing that "it's time" to rebrand its athletic department, ASU unveiled university-wide changes to its logos and uniforms during a Tuesday afternoon news conference in Tempe. The new gear will debut this fall.
ASU's football helmets will feature a new pitchfork logo with modified trident-looking stripes on the sleeves. The Sun Devils football team has also added black jerseys and helmets, creating the first alternate look in school history.
Gone - or, at least, minimized - is Sparky, the program's instantly identifiable cartoon mascot. The original Sun Devil will remain as a sticker on the back of the team's helmets.
Sparkle 1, Sparky 0.
