Throughout Friday several U.S. federal law enforcement agencies were working with Mexican authorities on an arrest operation in the Lukeville area, southwest of Tucson, officials said.
“The operation targets criminal elements and organizations operating in and around Sonoyta, Mexico,” Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Gillian Christensen said in a written statement.
News 4 Tucson first reported Friday morning that Mexican federal police Blackhawk helicopters had launched from Arizona into the border town of Sonoyta, across from Lukeville, about 150 miles from Tucson, and that there were dozens of federal agents from ICE, Customs and Border Protection and the DEA on scene.
The investigation is ongoing, Christensen said Friday evening. Multiple calls to Mexican authorities were not returned.
