A memorial service will be held for former two-term Tucson Mayor George Miller, who gave up his teaching career rather than testify before U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy-era House Un-American Activities Committee.
Miller, 92, died early Christmas morning. The service will be held at the Tucson Jewish Community Center, 3800 E. River Road, at 2 p.m. on Jan. 11.
The Democrat served more than two decades at City Hall. He spent 14 years as a city councilman and eight years as mayor before retiring from politics in 1999.
In 1953, Miller was called before the committee to explain why he refused to sign a loyalty oath required to keep his teaching job.
He refused to testify, ending his teaching career.
Miller is survived by his wife, Roslyn, and their eight children, 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
