EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A campus-wide ban on all tobacco products goes into effect at Michigan State University next month.
The ban includes all tobacco products, including cigarettes, chewable tobacco, vaporizers, E-cigarettes and hookahs. The Lansing State Journal reports (http://on.lsj.com/29SfPV4) the ban that goes into effect Aug. 15 prohibits tobacco use in buildings, on the lawns and sidewalks, even in personal vehicles.
University officials say the ban is a matter of public health.
For Michigan State student smokers, punishments could range from a written warning to a suspension. Complaints against employees would go through human resources.
Michigan State spokesman Jason Cody says university officials are aware that when the ban goes into effect it won't be like flipping a light switch. He says it's part of a process of becoming a healthier place.
