We admire them. We envy them. We cheer for them. Athletes of all types have longed impressed the masses with their uncommon abilities and impressive physiques.
But where there is sport there is often scandal and these days it seems more prevalent than ever.
Whether it be ethical, sexual or criminal, sordid stories involving collegiate and professional athletes are a common appearance on tabloid covers and even newspaper front pages.
Tiger Woods and his alleged 20-something mistresses. Ben Roethlisberger's multiple assault accusations and suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, whatever that means. A college lacrosse player accused of murdering his girlfriend. The stories range from ridiculous to heart-breaking.
And they happen "on the field," as well.
