The former king of England, his wife and their dogs, arrived in Tucson on Feb. 28, 1959.
The Duke and the woman he loved, the Duchess, never lost their royal cool. Not even when the crowd swarmed and jostled them, almost trampling their three pugs. The crowd was brought under control by the police.
After they received white Stetson hats and a pair of matching cowboy boots from the Tucson Sunshine Club, the Windsors proceeded to the Arizona Inn where they were staying. They planned to spend most of the month of March in Tucson.

The Duke and Duchess chose to maintain a low social profile while they were here. An avid sportsman, the Duke enjoyed attending baseball games and playing golf. While he was off playing golf, the Duchess said she spent her time writing letters.
As for those pugs, well, Disraeli, Trooper and Davy Crockett apparently were very happy here. The Duchess explained “You know all pugs have asthma and they seem to snort less, already.”
