The goal is always to pack light. Executing that, however, is easier said than done. But Eagle Creek's Global Companion backpacks (available in 65- and 40-liter sizes) are specifically designed to keep everything organized, allowing you carry a surprising amount of stuff on your trip.
Unlike most backpacks, the Companion opens butterfly-style, like a suitcase, allowing you to easily pack and access clothing stored in two separate compartments (a mesh covering keeps them separated but allows you to see inside).
It features nine pockets designed with the traveler in mind, for things like water bottles, a cellphone, a jacket, toiletries and muddy shoes. A padded laptop sleeve is accessible from the top of the backpack, making it easy to get in and out, and lockable zippers allow for some security. A built-in rain fly can be deployed in bad weather.

Perhaps most importantly, the Companion's shoulder straps, back panel and hip belt are all padded and ergonomically designed, allowing you to carry the majority of the weight of the pack on your hips. So get organized, and leave the extra weight at home.
