Much like the Super Bowl on Feb.5, Oscar night is a lot more fun if you’re pulling for a favorite.
With the nominations out, interest is heating up for the Feb. 26 event.
There are plenty of awards to be won: Nine films are vying for that Best Picture.
Then you have best foreign films, documentaries, shorts and many more films packed with Oscar-nominated worthiness. That’s a lot to watch.
At least through next Thursday, Tucsonans can still catch the films nominated for best picture as they were meant to be viewed — on the big screen.
“Hidden Figures” and “La La Land” remain in the multiplexes — and you can even watch them while enjoying dinner and a beer at Roadhouse Cinemas. The other nominees, “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Moonlight,” “Arrival,” “Hell and High Water,” “Manchester by the Sea,” “Lion” and “Fences,” are also on silver screens around town.

The nonprofit Loft Cinema, at 3233 E. Speedway, has made itself the go-to spot for Oscar fans over the years. J.J. Giddings, the Loft’s marketing director, said he expects the theater will keep “Moonlight,” which received eight nominations, through Oscar night. “Jackie,” which won Natalie Portman a nomination for best actress, plays at least through next week at the Loft and Loews Foothills 15.
Giddings said the Loft plans to open “Elle,” on Friday, Feb. 3, which earned Isabelle Huppert (the Meryl Streep of France) a nomination for best actress.
Opening at the Loft the week of Feb. 10 is “Toni Erdmann,” a German film nominated for best foreign film that’s “an alternately hilarious and mortifying comedy following the fraught relationship between a repressed corporate consultant and her incessantly prank-playing father.”
The Loft presents the Oscar Nominated Short Film Documentaries on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The event starts at 6 p.m. with a Girl Scout cookie and beer pairing. Giddings recommends getting tickets in advance because the short film programs usually sell out.
On Feb. 17, the Loft will open “I Am Not Your Negro,” nominated for best documentary, and “The Salesman,” nominated for best foreign film.
Watch for the Oscar Nominated Short Films on Tuesday, Feb. 21, and Saturday, Feb. 25. The Animated Short Films screen Thursday, Feb. 23, and on Feb. 26 —Oscar Sunday.
At some point, Giddings said, the Loft will probably screen all of the Oscar-nominated films.
The Loft’s staff, movie buffs also, came up with a list of their 10 favorite films — most of them not Oscar contenders.
