Arizona, New Mexico have long football history
It’s been awhile since Arizona and New Mexico last faced off, but in Wildcat history, it’s still something of a storied matchup.
Consider: Arizona has played the Lobos 66 times, more than any team not named Arizona State.
It makes sense — from 1962 until 1977, the Lobos and Wildcats both played in the Western Athletic Conference, before Arizona moved onto the Pac-10 in 1978.
Arizona holds the edge with a 43-20-3 record.
The stakes: From 1938 until 1990, the winner of the rivalry took home the Kit Carson Rifle, a gun that reportedly belonged to the famous frontier scout.
Before the 1997 Insight.com bowl, the two schools discontinued the rifle due to its history of violence against Native Americans.
