Tucson-based Asarco held a formal dedication ceremony this week — led by President and COO Manuel Ramos — of the expansion of the south mill at the Mission Mine south of town.
The expansion, which cost more than $60 million, has added 9,000 tons per day of additional crushing and milling capacity.
Since 2010, Asarco has invested an average of $120 million per year in its mining and process units in the United States, spokesman Thomas L. Aldrich, a company vice president, said in a news release.
The expansion has created 30 jobs, increasing Mission’s workforce to 660 people. Mission employees earn an average take-home pay of more than $62,000 per year, plus benefits, the company says.
“The expansion has increased the south mill’s production by nearly 50 percent over the present capacity of 18,000 tons of ore per day,” Tom Phillips, general manager of the Mission Complex, said in the news release.
