Three factors - the Asarco strike, another copper strike at the Zaldivar mine in Chile owned by Vancouver-based Placer Dome Inc., and a June earthquake in Chile that damaged equipment at BHP Billiton's Cerro Colorado mine - have industry experts concerned about short-term copper shortages.
What's next:
Union officials representing workers at Mexican copper mines owned by Grupo Mexico - Asarco's parent company - are meeting in Mexico City to decide how they will show support for striking Asarco workers. Mexican union officials pledged solidarity to Asarco's workers at a June 21 rally held in Tucson as part of a "Day of Global Solidarity" organized by the United Steelworkers of America.
