Fitness enthusiasts — and those who resolve to spend more time outdoors and get in shape for the new year — can stock up on gear at a new shop.
Mathi, at 2640 E. Broadway, is a “combination of a biking, hiking and running store,” said Mufaddal Dawoodbhoy, who co-owns the store with his two brothers.
The store’s name, Mathi, means “up” in Nepali, Dawoodbhoy said. “My older brother went to Nepal a few times and got this inspiration for an outdoor store,” he said. “That’s how we came up with the name and got into the business, because we’re so interested in the outdoors.”
Along with selling outdoor apparel brand names, such as Columbia and Adidas, the 1,500-square-foot store sells animal print T-shirts, water bottles and other accessories. It also focuses on running, walking and hiking shoes from brands such as Asics, Keen and New Balance.

Bicycles and a service department will be added sometime in January, Dawoodbhoy said.
The closest competition for Mathi is Performance Footwear, 5350 E. Broadway, a few miles east of the store, he said, adding, “We’re spread out from other outdoor stores.”
