Tucson-based Cloud Microphones, which makes high-fidelity ribbon microphones and related audio equipment, is one of three Arizona winners of the President’s “E” Award for exporting, the U.S. Department of Commerce said Monday.
Cloud Microphones was one of two Arizona-based businesses to win the “E” award, along with Phoenix-based Exos, a provider of health and performance services to athletes.
The City of Phoenix also won an “E” award for export service.
Created by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, the President’s “E” Award is the highest recognition any U.S. entity can receive for “making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports.” Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker presented the “E” award to 123 recipients nationwide on Monday.
Cloud’s line of microphones and mic amplifiers are made on the Navajo Nation in partnership with Tooh Dineh Industries.

An active participant in federal trade-assistance programs, including the U.S. Commercial Service, Cloud says it has boosted its sales more than 400 percent since 2013 thanks partly to increased exports.
For the first time in its 54-year history, this year’s “E” award winners represent every state and the District of Columbia. Of this year’s 123 honorees, 105 are small- and medium-sized businesses, and 64 firms are manufacturers.
Past Tucson-area winners of the “E” award include Pace Technologies, a provider of equipment for materials testing and measurement, in 2015; and mining-software maker Mintec Inc., in 2013.
This year’s recipients contributed to the United States’ exporting $2.23 trillion worth of goods and services in 2015, and the estimated 11.5 million American jobs supported by exports.
