Flamenco titan Paco de Lucía will be remembered through vibrant song and dance at the Sixth annual Tucson Flamenco Festival this weekend.
The famed guitarist, best known for his tireless promotion of the Spanish art form, died from a heart attack in February while on vacation in Mexico. He was 66.
Marita Gomez and Vicente Sanchez, owners of Casa Vicente, where the flamenco festival is held each year, have dedicated the weeklong event to his memory.
A performance Saturday night, commissioned by Sanchez, will showcase a musical piece, arranged with de Lucía in mind, by Tucson-based guitarist Misael Barraza Diaz.
Diaz is a second-year graduate student with the University of Arizona’s guitar program. He will be accompanied by singer Macarena Giraldez and dancer Mele Martinez.

Gomez said Casa Vicente has twice as many touring performers participating this year as in years past.
