The Rogue Theatre’s 2015-16 season is steeped in tragedy with a few smiles.
The company opens with Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” in repertory with Tom Stoppard’s “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead,” a sort of dream pairing (Oct. 15-Nov. 22). “Hamlet,” of course, is one of the most thrilling, powerful tragedies by the Bard. The Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in Stoppard’s absurd comedy are pulled from “Hamlet” — they were the friends of Prince Hamlet who spied on him on behalf of King Claudius.
That may be the last chance to lighten up at Rogue next season.
Following the opening plays is Marina Carr’s “By the Bog of Cats,” a sort of Irish version of Euripedes’ “Medea,” the ultimate in tragedies (Jan. 7-24); “Miss Julie,” August Strindberg’s drama about love, class and baggage one carries courtesy of one’s family (Feb. 25-March 13, 2016), and “The Bridge of San Luis Rey” (April 21-May 8). The classic Thornton Wilder novel about life, death and God will be adapted by the Rogue.
