El Guero Canelo, Tucson’s nationally known Sonoran hot-dog purveyor, is expanding again, this time to midtown.
Owner Daniel Contreras is setting up shop in a former Los Betos location (but don’t expect a drive-through). The restaurant, at 5802 E. 22nd St., planned to open today.
This is the third El Guero. The first, on South 12th Avenue, opened in 1993 in an outdoor patio, with trailers serving as the cook spaces. Fourteen years later, in 2007, Contreras built a cavernous, air-conditioned building on North Oracle Road and introduced the bacon-wrapped hot-dogs to the north side.
The new midtown restaurant will look a little like the Oracle Road location, Contreras said, with an open dining room inside and tables outside. Contreras said he has started remodeling the building and has installed all new equipment.

He said customers had been urging him to add the new location for a long time.
The restaurant will be open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
Next up: Phoenix.
Contreras said he could be serving his famous dogs, which have been featured on the Travel Channel’s “Man Vs. Food” and “Food Wars,” in the Valley of the Sun by early 2012.
