Despite recent sprinkles of monsoon rain, it's still pretty darn hot out there. So it's only to be expected that a young man or woman's thoughts turn to refreshing treats.
What better candidate than the new Apple Cherry slush at Sonic, bolstering its already stellar line of slushes and drinks. You might have seen the new Apple Cherry slush at Sonic advertised on TV by those slightly irritating people in the car who apparently constantly eat at Sonic together despite not really getting along. Sonic boasts that the slush contains 100 percent real apple juice, and you can certainly tell.
Don't forget that it's "Happy Hour" at participating Sonics from 2 to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, where all drinks and slushes are half off. You can get an absurdly large Apple Cherry slush for under a dollar (prices may vary). There's always the Route 44 option, which could probably keep you hydrated until the next epoch.

In related news, I wrote last week about Sonic's "Extreme Tots," which didn't seem to be available in the Tucson area. Stuart Carey, the local director of operations for the chain, e-mailed me in response, saying that Extreme Tots are indeed available around these parts. Even if they're not on the menu, "we are more than happy to serve our guests Extreme Tots should they request them," the representative said. Extreme Tots are topped with onions, chili, cheese and jalapeños.
Taco Bell breaks breakfast, fast
Last week I also wrote about Taco Bell's new breakfast menu, and a promotion where free items would be given away on Friday mornings in July. Many a hungry and adventurous fast-food connoisseur made a "run for the border," as the advertising says, early last Friday morning, only to be denied the sweet satisfaction you can only get with a bacon and egg taco.
As Fred Willard's character in "A Mighty Wind" would say, "Wha' happened?" Turns out that breakfast menu as a whole was scrapped in Tucson last Sunday, and as a result, the promotion was scrapped as well. A Taco Bell employee told me that they moved on to "try it out in other test markets" and they'll "probably bring it back in a year or so," although why Taco Bell apparently decided that so hastily after advertising the promotion remains a mystery. Further thickening the plot, as of last Friday there were still several posters advertising the morning-only items — a mere two days before the breakfast menu's reported dismissal.
Who needs the Kwik-E-Mart? 7-Eleven
Convenience store megachain 7-Eleven has converted a handful of its stores in spots such as Los Angeles and New York City into "Kwik-E-Mart" locations, as a very dedicated, visible plug for "The Simpsons Movie," out July 27. Although no shops in Arizona got the treatment, you can still find some presence from the movie, as the Slurpee machines have turned into "Squishee" machines — like the sugary frozen drinks dished out by Kwik-E-Mart proprietor Apu on the series — with corresponding, "Simpsons"-themed cups.
