Ranking the 2016 Emmy-nominated TV shows
On September 18, television takes the spotlight on the red carpet at the 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

This September, television takes the spotlight on the red carpet at the 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. For nearly seven decades, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has recognized outstanding achievements in television. While there are various categories of the awards — Regional, Engineering and Daytime — most television fans focus on the Primetime Emmys.
To be nominated for a Primetime Emmy, a television show must be accessible to at least 50 percent of the country between 6:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m., and cannot be entered into any other Emmy competition. From $10 million episodes following fictional families battling it out in Westeros to low-budget shows that attempt to highlight deep-rooted societal issues, there is a wide variety of entertainment available in the evening hours.
PrettyFamous, an entertainment data site by Graphiq, ranked 51 TV shows with at least one 2016 Primetime Emmy nomination. The shows are ranked by their Smart Rating, a score out of 100 that takes into account IMDb ratings and IMDb votes, as well as the number of Emmy awards won previously. Because of this, some longer-running shows ranked higher. Ties were broken by past Emmy wins, then by the number of current nominations. Scores were calculated as of August 10, 2016.
Two of the shows on this list were nominated for over 20 awards each; one show hopes to reign supreme (again) as the outstanding drama series and the other received 22 nominations after its inaugural season. The theory that nontraditional networks are beating out basic cable seemed quite plausible when considering heavily-nominated shows, two of which aired originally on HBO and FX. Netflix also created multiple high-ranking television series in 2016 including "Master of None" and "Bloodline." With a plethora of excellent options, it will be a close race in many categories at the 2016 Primetime Emmys.
Note: Some TV shows nominated for a Primetime Emmy were excluded from this list due to insufficient IMDb data.
