Sunset Crater is seen just west of Flagstaff, Ariz., in this May, 1999 file photo. Explorer John Wesley Powell is often credited with discovering Sunset Crater, but at least one researcher now believes the crater was first charted by Lt. George Wheeler on expedition for the United States government in 1871.
