Re: the Sept. 29 guest column “Koch Foundation money spurs doubt in UA philosophy center.”
John Warnock presents an interesting argument concerning the appropriateness of accepting Koch Foundation money, offering a Dennett “thought experiment” to outline his position. I’d like to expand on his thoughts by asking:
1) What is the political composition of the UA philosophy faculty?
2) Is there no correlation between their political and philosophical thoughts?
3) Is it of any advantage to a student or non-tenured professor to hold philosophical positions similar to those of the tenured faculty?
4) Are philosophers uniquely freer from promoting and holding their own ‘ideologue’ positions? 5) Are not most philosophical systems ideologically based; dependent upon un-provable premises that must be accepted on faith?

My advice: gratefully take the money and pursue a course that surrounds you with those holding more, rather than less, divergent philosophical views.
