"Scorned and Driven Out" is the theme of a summer lecture series about religion that begins Sunday.
The series will focus on religious exiles from the Reformation in Europe: Quakers, Mennonites, Huguenots and English Catholics. It is sponsored by the University of Arizona's Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies and by St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church.
In an age of religious intolerance, exiles of the Reformation were not accepted by the Anglican and French Catholic churches.
In two cases, English royalty approved of exiles' emigration to North America in order to populate colonies.
The first lecture is titled "Huguenots in Colonial America: Exile on Main Street" and will be given at 10:15 a.m. Sunday by UA graduate student Tod Meinke.
