The new state law requiring license plate frames to keep off the “Arizona” at the top of the plate could soon be revised.
A bill in the state Legislature would soften the law and the associated penalty.
As it sits, a license-plate frame imposing on this state’s name is reason enough for an officer to pull over a vehicle. Then, once pulled over, fines could reach past $100.
But the bill would make any frame covering this state’s name (out-of-state plates are still exempt) a secondary offense. That means you could get pulled over for speeding, and then cited for the frame and the speeding. You couldn’t get pulled over solely for the frame.
Right now, the frame covering part of the state name is reason enough to be pulled over.
The bill would also drop a first-time offense to $30. Second-time offenders within a one-year period would pay $100.

Don’t forget, though, it’s still illegal to have a license plate cover which makes your license plate illegible.
The language requiring that hasn’t changed: “A person shall maintain each license plate so it is clearly legible.”
