A 38-year-old woman who admitted trying to obstruct an investigation into the abuse of her 7-month-old daughter was sentenced to three years probation Tuesday by Pima County Superior Court Judge Richard Fields.
Alfredo Antonio Lopez, 47, and Maria Del Carmen Serrato, 38, were arrested in December 2006 after they brought their daughter, Sinai, to a hospital with head injuries.
The injuries were so severe, the baby underwent surgery to relieve the swelling and bleeding inside her brain, Tucson police said at the time.
Serrato pleaded guilty to attempted obstruction of a criminal investigation or prosecution and could have received up to two years in prison.
According to court documents, Lopez pleaded no contest to child abuse in mid-August, admitting he failed to check on Sinai despite her having been sleeping an extended period of time. Lopez's attorney, Natasha Wrae, told Fields her client assumed Serrato had checked on the baby throughout the day.

Fields sentenced Lopez to one year in prison last week, but he also gave him credit for the 642 days he’s already served in jail.
The baby and the couple's two other children were taken into the custody of state Child Protective Services after the incident.
