The 52-year-old Tucson man killed Wednesday evening when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle has been identified as Fernando L. Mendez, police said Thursday.
Mendez apparently bolted into traffic and made it across the eastbound lanes of East Tanque Verde Road and was crossing the westbound lanes when he was struck by a 2000 Ford Explorer, said Sgt. Mark Robinson, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
Mendez, who was wearing dark clothing, was not in a crosswalk, although there was one about 150 yards away where Tanque Verde meets North Sabino Canyon Road, he said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, Robinson said.
The driver of the Explorer will not be cited as it appears that he did not have ample time to stop and there was no indication that speed, alcohol or drugs were involved, Robinson said.
