PHOENIX — A man convicted of killing a Japanese tourist in the Grand Canyon was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Randy Redtail Wescogame had pleaded guilty in September to stabbing the victim after luring her off a main trail by offering to guide her to scenic canyon waterfalls.
Thirty-four-year-old Tomomi Hanamure of Tokyo was traveling alone when she was killed in May 2006.
The 20-year-old Hanamure, who was traveling by herself, was reported missing May 9, 2006, a day after she went hiking to the Havasupai Falls after checking into a lodge on the remote reservation.
Two robbery and two kidnapping charges against Wescogame were dismissed as part of the plea deal.
