MESA — What started out as a day of fun ended tragically when a collision involving five all-terrain vehicles near Saguaro Lake left one man dead, authorities said.
The driver who was killed was described as between 30 and 40 years old, and no further details were available pending notification of family members, said Doug Matteson, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
The incident took place about 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Butcher Jones recreation area near the lake, Matteson said. Five men were riding on ATVs when two of the vehicles collided killing one of the drivers, Matteson said.
The other three ATVs also crashed into the wreckage, Matteson said. The other drivers were not seriously injured, he said.
The accident was reported to authorities by an off-duty Gilbert policeman who used a radio he had with him in the secluded area, Matteson said.
