Federal and state inspectors are investigating a vehicle accident that killed a worker Sunday at Tucson-based Asarco’s Ray Mine, near Kearny.
Robert Christopher Stewart, a 29-year-old from Globe, drove a haul truck into a berm while making a turn. The vehicle tipped over and Stewart was pronounced dead at the scene, said Tim Evans, assistant mine inspector with the office of the Arizona Mine Inspector, which is investigating the incident. The Mine Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor is also investigating.
Stewart had worked at the mine for 2 years and 7 months.
“Asarco is cooperating fully with federal and state authorities in their investigation of this accident," Asarco president and CEO Joseph F. Lapinsky said in a statement Monday. “Our sympathy and prayers go out to family members, friends and fellow miners who are affected by this loss.”

The mine remains open, but the site of the accident is closed while the investigation is completed, Evans said.
