A man suspected of robbing a midtown bank Saturday morning was shot and killed by police.
The robber, who was armed with a handgun, entered the Chase Bank at 6257 E. Broadway shortly after it opened at 9 a.m. He approached a teller, displayed his gun and demanded money from the register, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a spokesman for the Tucson Police Department. He was given an undisclosed amount of money and he fled on a bicycle.
As police were responding to the scene, a witness who had followed the robber flagged down one of the officers and pointed out the man on the bicycle. Officers chased him into a neighborhood less than a mile west of the bank.
By then another 911 call came in from a resident in the 5600 block of East Ninth Street near North Craycroft Road and East Broadway. The caller said he found a bicycle in the front yard and thought someone was hiding in a shed in his backyard.

Three officers “responded to the residence and checked the backyard where they located an adult male in the shed,” Dugan said. “Multiple shots were fired and the suspect was struck.” He was taken to a hospital where he died.
Detectives from the homicide unit and internal affairs are conducting parallel investigations into the shooting, which is standard practice in all TPD officer-involved shootings, Dugan said.
