Opa! Autumn is also festival season here in Southern Arizona. There's seldom a fall weekend without a gathering packed with music, food and get-out-of-the-house activities.
The Tucson Greek Festival gets underway Thursday, Sept. 23 and continues through the weekend at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 1145 E. Fort Lowell Road.
You can almost taste the spanakopita (spinach pie), gyro sandwiches, dolmathakia (stuffed cold grape leaves), dessert like diples (deep-fried pastry) or baklava (phyllo pastry layered with walnuts, sugar and cinnamon and topped honey syrup) at this celebration of all things Greek.
There's plenty more that food (but you might have guessed our priority) at the the four-day showcase of Greek culture:
- Music and dancing.
- Folk dance.
- Cooking demonstrations.
- Lectures.
- Greek beer, wine and coffee.
