A grease fire forced the evacuation of Park Place mall Wednesday evening.
The fire broke out at a McDonald's restaurant in the food court area, causing an estimated $100,000 in damage, said Capt. Barrett Baker, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman.
Firefighters were called to the mall at about 6:40 p.m. In all, 28 firefighters in 12 units responded.
The blaze went into a vent and damaged the restaurant's ceiling before it extinguished itself.
From the mall's roof, firefighters used a thermo-imaging camera to look into the vent and ensure the fire was out.
It took firefighters 17 minutes to confirm that the fire was extinguished.
More than 1,000 people were evacuated.
The mall in the 5800 block of East Broadway was closed for more than a hour.
