A rock climber remains hospitalized after getting stung more than 1,000 times when his climbing group was attacked by a bee swarm atop Mount Lemmon Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
Three people were able to escape the swawm, but one man was stranded for several hours after the climbers encountered a bee hive about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, said Anne-Marie Braswell, a Rural/Metro Fire Department spokeswoman.
Search and rescue crews were able to rescue the man about 9:15 p.m. after rappeling down to his location and get him to safety, said Dep. Jason Ogan, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman.
The man was one of four people - including a woman and a child - that were climbing in the mountains when they encountered the hive, Ogan said.
The other three people were able to get away from the swarm without getting trapped, he said.
