A former assistant chief in the Tucson Police Department was selected Wednesday to be the chief of police for Sahuarita.
John W. Harris began his law-enforcement career with the Tucson Police Department in 1974.
Harris held many positions in the department, including assistant chief, before moving to other police departments.
His most recent position was in Evanston, Wyo., where he had been chief since December 2003, according to a news release from Barbara Dolan, spokeswoman for the town of Sahuarita.
Harris was selected from a pool of 68 applicants, Dolan said.
The Sahuarita Police Department employs 25 officers, compared with the Evanston Police Department's 34. About 11,000 people live in Evanston, while the July 2005 population estimate for Sahuarita was almost 14,000.

The Town Council interviewed Harris and one other applicant Tuesday and the town announced Harris' selection Wednesday.
"The Sahuarita Town Council was very impressed with Mr. Harris' background and service in law enforcement," Sahuarita Mayor Charles Oldham said in the news release.
The last Sahuarita Police Chief, Stuart Heller, resigned from the position Sept. 16, Dolan said.
Larry Stevens, a commander in the Oro Valley Police Department, served as Sahuarita's interim police chief until the end of February, she said.
Harris will begin his job April 24.
