An Oro Valley man who killed a protected prairie dog near Sonoita last fall could lose his hunting license today.
The Arizona Game and Fish Commission will decide whether to suspend or revoke Terry Lee Metteer's license at a hearing scheduled for 2 p.m. at Game and Fish headquarters in Phoenix.
Metteer, 59, pleaded guilty in December in Pima County Justice Court to a misdemeanor charge of taking wildlife during a closed season, court records show.
He was fined $175 after admitting to shooting and killing a black-tailed prairie dog on Oct. 23 in a remote area east of Sonoita and north of Arizona 82 where there were signs posted indicating hunting of the animals was prohibited, accoridng to court records.
The area is where Game and Fish had placed about 100 of the protected animals in 2008 as part of a reintroduction program, spokesman Mark Hart said.
