The Adult Education Program at St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church is offering a series of discussions this month on the pros and cons of prison privatization.
The discussions will be facilitated by Diane Wilson, who has a master's degree in counseling/guidance and 20 years of experience working with people in prisons and as an advocate for prison reform.
The discussions will be held at 11 a.m. Sundays in the church center. Wilson will be joined by several guests, some from the American Friends Service Committee and others who are former prisoners.
The first session, this Sunday, will provide basic background information for understanding the issue of prison privatization, especially in Arizona.
The second session, on Jan. 13, will explore the issue of who benefits from privatizing prisons and what the costs are - socially, financially and personally.
