Memories had been made at Del Rio since 1948, when Mike Hernandez opened the ballroom. But its location, 718 W. Speedway, put it directly in the path of the Interstate 10 widening project, and the dance hall's days were numbered. Hernandez, shown in front of Del Rio on July 21, 1994, was preparing for the club's final booking, a quinceañera. Then the contents would be sold, and the wrecking ball would take over.
