Come Friday, some Tucsonans may not be able to tune in to their favorite soap operas.
Nielsen Media Research estimates that 3.3 million households in 31 states — including Arizona — are not prepared for the switch from analog to digital television.
And although many people have obtained the converter box, they may not be installed, said Norma Galeana, spokeswoman for Best Buy's Geek Squad tech company, which is offering free installation until June 30.
Households with cable or satellite television service or with a digital television set will not be affected.
The switch was mandated by Congress to free up channels for public-safety communications by police and fire departments and rescue squads. Other channels will be auctioned to companies that can provide wireless services such as broadband Internet.
