At her Pet Haven Memorial Cemetery on West Valencia Road, cemetery operator Dixie Dunn wanted to keep the cost of a pet funeral affordable. One way she did that was to make the coffins herself, as she was doing on July 17, 1979. It was a labor of love for Dunn, who said, "For some people, it's their only companionship." A funeral for a large dog could run about $115, and for a cat, $70. But the cemetery also served as the final resting place for a parakeet, myna bird and a rat.
