SCOTT BRAUCHER / ARIZONA DAILY STAR 1977 Chosen as one of the top news stories of 1977, it was a big deal for Tucson when IBM announced in October 1977, that it planned to build a manufacturing plant here. By December the bulldozers had broken ground at the site for the temporary plant and laboratory buildings at the southwest corner of South Country Club and East Elvira roads. IBM had been considering a Tucson location and had begun buying land here in 1969. The company's initial plans included 1,000 employees. In the 2007 Star 200 survey, IBM ranked as the 30th-largest employer in Southern Arizona with 1,750 full-time-equivalent positions.
