Noncustodial parents will have to dig a bit deeper for monthly child-support payments beginning today.
The Clearinghouse Fee, which is meant to ensure payments reach kids, increased to $5 a month from $2.25. The fee increase goes into effect with payments due today.
Employers who are ordered by the court to withhold income of child-support-paying parents will also begin deducting the extra fee.
The increase is part of a legislative move to generate more money for the state. It helps cover the cost of sending out court orders.
