Killed on duty
● At least 11 Arizona police dogs have died in the line of duty, including Rico. Here is information on some of them:
● The Phoenix Police Department has lost three dogs. Roscoe was killed July 13, 1984, hit by a passing car after helping an officer fight off three suspects. Dax was killed Oct. 20, 1994, shot by a homicide suspect. Hunter was killed April 17, 1996, shot five times by a suspect hiding in some bushes. Hunter crawled back to his handler and the officer began racing to a vet, but Hunter died in his arms.
l The Tempe Police Department has lost one dog. Murph was killed Nov. 21, 1986, shot by a suspect after being sent into a home in which the man had hidden. The man then shot at officers who later entered the home and he was shot and killed.
● The Tucson Police Department has lost one dog. Woo was killed Nov. 20, 1974, hit by a patrol car at East Speedway and North Holly Avenue after chasing after a stray dog at a burglary investigation.
