Smuggler of humans given nearly 4 years
A Marana man received a 46-month federal prison sentence Monday for his conviction on alien-smuggling charges.
Darrell Wayne Dempsey, 50, was convicted in February in U.S. District Court in Phoenix, according to court records.
Dempsey was arrested on Aug. 24 in Pinal County after a sheriff's deputy tried to pull over Dempsey's pickup on westbound Interstate 10 near Casa Grande, court records show.
Dempsey slowed his truck down, allowing 10 men to jump out and run into the desert, court records show. Deputies found five more people hidden inside the truck, four of whom were trapped inside the truck bed under a flat, screwed-down cover that prevented them from opening the tailgate from the inside, court records show.
